Dollar Shave Club’s Men’s Magazine “Mel” Grows Up
Unilever, one of the top five largest consumer goods companies in the world, purchased Dollar Shave Club for $1 billion. The parent company spent over $8.5 billion in 2017 on marketing alone. Mel lives quietly as a probably rarely accounted for blip inside that; It’s supposedly brand-building for Dollar Shave Club–members are mailed a physical magazine of Mel content as part of their subscription–while maintaining independence.

More than 300 news publications across the country are joining together to defend the role of a free press and denounce President Trump's ongoing attacks on the news media in coordinated editorials publishing Thursday, according to a tally by The Boston Globe.

Laptops, Tablets: Research Says There's Still a Strong Market
A new report from Strategic Analytics says that while those old stalwarts are harder and harder to sell (or get excited about), their household penetration rate worldwide is an impressive 30%. And in many developed countries, 60%-70% of homes have one or the other or both devices. The report predicts worldwide sales of connected computing devices will increase from 354 million today to 403 million in 2022. Revenues will increase from $148 billion to $156 billion.
Q2 Magazine Media 360° Social Media Report Data and Audience Engagement Metrics!
MPA–The Association of Magazine Media has released the Magazine Media 360° Social Media Report for 2nd Quarter 2018 which includes a metric designed to measure audience engagement. The Q2 2018 Social Media Report reveals that magazine brand Likes/Followers are up slightly (+2.4%) versus the prior quarter. In the last three months, Likes/Followers on the four tracked social networks increased 26 million to a total of 1.1 billion.

Independent and enthusiast magazine media executives from across the country came together for robust conversation and candid idea sharing at the 14th Annual IMAG Conference in Boston. The event was hosted by Elizabeth Bramson-Boudreau, CEO and publisher, MIT Technology Review; David Nussbaum, CEO and chairman of the board, America’s Test Kitchen; and Jamie Trowbridge, president and CEO, Yankee Publishing. The theme was Revolution: both a nod to Boston’s role in the formation of America and a representation of the extreme transformation we are seeing in the magazine media industry.
