Hearst Taps Digital-Savvy Executive Troy Young to Run Its Magazines
"Troy Young named president of Hearst Magazines, publisher of titles such as Cosmopolitan and Esquire: Troy Young, the 50-year-old president of Hearst Magazines Digital Media, is succeeding David Carey as president, effective immediately." reports Jeffrey Trachtenberg. “What has distinguished Troy and his team is the ability to move fast, and keep pivoting and innovating,” said Steven Swartz, president and chief executive of parent company Hearst, in an interview. “A publisher has to be innovative in print and do a number of things well digitally for consumers and advertisers.”
Hearst Magazines Taps New Digital Hires at Esquire, Elle
Joanna Rothkopf joins Esquire.com on August 6 as its deputy editor. She was previously a senior editor, writer and on-camera host at Jezebel. Stoeffle brings a background in both editorial and creative agency to the company. Before Elle.com, Stoeffel worked at Conde Nast’s in-house creative agency 23Stories, where she was a senior editor.
The Economist Revamps The Big Mac Index to Help Boost Subscribers
The Economist has redesigned its purchasing-power tool, the Big Mac Index. The Big Mac Index was begun in 1986 as a way to compare the wealth across countries relative to the cost of a McDonald’s burger. The index has historically been available outside The Economist’s paywall as a way to sample its content, build loyalty and recognition with students, and drive people to other parts of The Economist to subscribe. According to the publisher, a quarter of people use the tool for academic assignments, and getting The Economist’s tools into the hands of students is a way for subscription publishers to build habit and sales in younger readers.

Smart speakers are gaining adoption faster than any technology since the mobile phone, with the number of smart-speaker users in the U.S. expected to will rise at a compound annual growth rate of 47.9 percent between 2016 and 2020, eMarketer says. Eighteen percent of Americans own a smart speaker, and 51 percent have been using them more often over time, according to a report by NPR and Edison Research.

Independent and enthusiast magazine media executives from across the country came together for robust conversation and candid idea sharing at the 14th Annual IMAG Conference in Boston. The event was hosted by Elizabeth Bramson-Boudreau, CEO and publisher, MIT Technology Review; David Nussbaum, CEO and chairman of the board, America’s Test Kitchen; and Jamie Trowbridge, president and CEO, Yankee Publishing. The theme was Revolution: both a nod to Boston’s role in the formation of America and a representation of the extreme transformation we are seeing in the magazine media industry.
