John Amato

The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group

John Amato has helped transform The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group into one of the most powerful forces in today’s media landscape. The company rocketed to the top three biggest entertainment outlets nationally, with 30 million monthly unique visitors and a social following of over 20 million, as Amato drove double-digit revenue rises in each year of his leadership.

Amato powered this growth with key strategic initiatives that included expansion into China, Thailand and the Philippines; the acquisition of Spin Media, leading to a combined digital presence of 45 million monthly unique views; the launch of Billboard’s video news service, Billboard News, which garnered 12 million monthly unique views in its first month; and the creation of the company’s first branded content studio, Adapt Studios, which produced a top 10 campaign in its first year of operation, according to Ad Age.

Amato also led the development and launch of the Billboard + Twitter Real-Time charts, which revamped the industry’s method of tracking music sales and catapulted Billboard to the No. 1 spot among U.S. publishers on Twitter by engagement. He forged a groundbreaking partnership with Instagram to provide exclusive access to content from the Grammy Awards and oversaw an initiative with Spotify to create the streaming service’s first music charts.

Previously, Amato served as chairman and chief executive officer of Backstage LLC, where he led the company’s operations and strategic direction. He also served as the president of Show Media, a transit-based out-of-home advertising company that he co-founded.
