American Society of Magazine Editors

Senior Food Editor at Garden & Gun

Garden & Gun is seeking an experienced senior-level editor to join our Charleston, South Carolina-based team and help expand our award-winning food and drink coverage. The ideal candidate is immersed in Southern food culture—its past, present, and future. G&G readers value story as much as service. So while you can recommend the best restaurants in every city in the South at a moment’s notice, you also know how to craft stories that take readers there.

The work is hands-on—we’re a small, creative, and highly collaborative team. During a typical week, you might find yourself: planning the next issue’s food and drink columns; reporting short digital-exclusive pieces about fall’s most-anticipated restaurant openings or new cookbooks; conceptualizing a magazine feature about tomatoes and brainstorming the art and photo plan to accompany it; or representing the magazine at a gathering of Southern culinary experts. In between, you might even have to mix a few bartender-submitted cocktails to make sure the recipes work before you write the bi-weekly email food newsletter about them.

  • Conceptualize, assign, and edit food and drink stories for the magazine and website
  • Write and produce digital content
  • Bring great packaging sense and headline-copy crafting to every piece
  • Quickly master G&G’s voice and tone, infusing every story with authenticity
  • Help maintain the magazine’s robust social-media presence
  • Maintain an impressive roster of professional culinary and editorial contacts
  • Champion cultural diversity and help bring new voices into the G&G fold
  • Be a collaborative partner to Digital and Marketing teams
  • Represent G&G at industry events

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of five years of relevant experience at a publishing, newspaper, or digital media company (must be met to be considered)
  • Must have a genuine love of Southern culture, a passion for Southern food, and deep understanding of G&G’s brand
  • Have finger on the pulse of Southern food, drink, restaurants and bars, chefs and bartenders, and culinary personalities
  • Can orchestrate recipe-sourcing and understand how to edit recipes for clarity to translate restaurant food into home kitchens
  • Possess exceptional communication, creative, and organizational skills
  • Be able to juggle multiple projects at once—and deliver each one on time
  • Able to work comfortably as part of a team or on your own
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud programs
