Senior Editor/Writer at National Association of Independent Schools

The Senior Editor/Writer supports the planning, creation, and production of NAIS editorial content, in print and online, across multiple channels. This position focuses primarily on the creation and production of Independent School magazine, NAIS’s quarterly flagship publication, but also works across the Membership and Community Engagement Team to create and edit additional NAIS content and identify cross-promotional opportunities.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Serve as a key member of the magazine team and contribute to magazine development and production—from story ideation/generation to editing to packaging to layout review—in print and online
    • Manage and serve as lead editor for specific sections/departments of the magazine, which includes commissioning, substantive editing, proofing, as well as working with authors to help them bring their ideas to life
    • Review layouts and provide design and editorial feedback
    • Proofread and fact-check
    • Participate in magazine-related production and design calls and meetings
    • Write as needed, including articles, sidebars, copy for magazine promotions, etc.
    • Develop ideas and content for the magazine’s online presence with an eye toward growth and expansion
  • Write and curate content for the NAIS website
  • Review and edit NAIS content, including website content, enewsletters, marketing materials, social media posts, etc.
  • Establish and manage a workflow process for editing projects to be outsourced
  • Ensure and enforce brand integrity by maintaining editorial style, voice, and tone across all NAIS content properties
  • Maintain and update the NAIS Style Guide as needed
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with experts and potential writers in the independent school community as well as the education community at large
  • Assist Editorial Director, as needed, with management of Independent Teacher

Additional responsibilities & tasks

  • Serve as an engaged and active member of the MCE team, as well as cross-functional teams (as they are created)
  • Participate in, support, and actively build a cooperative, information-sharing team and office culture

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, journalism, or related field
  • At least 6 years’ relevant work experience with advanced editing, writing, and proofreading skills, preferably with magazines
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit content for multiple audiences
  • Masterful knowledge of AP style (experience with Chicago Manual of Style a plus)
  • Extremely detail-oriented; must possess superior organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work efficiently and maintain a high level of productivity and quality, independently and as part of a team; to communicate regularly; balance multiple priorities; and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, team-focused environment
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of independent schools (preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; able to learn new software and web-based systems, including content management systems (CMS)
