Senior Editor at Men's Health

Men’s Health is seeking an experienced and imaginative editor to work in all editorial facets of the world’s leading health and wellness brand. This editor will plan, assign, write and edit stories in all of our pillar departments—fitness, health, nutrition, weight loss, relationships, style, and career.

A background in fitness writing is a big plus—someone with a clear-eyed view of training trends and exercise science, but the editor will work closely with top editors in all departments to map out lineups, sharpen ideas, and dream up creative ways to present information. We need a Jack or Jill of all trades who can handle stories from conception to page proof with speed and precision. The editor will work on everything from short front-of-book items to 5,000-word features. He or she knows fresh new writers to add to the Men’s Health roster and can translate academic journalese into clear, useful language. The bulk of the work will be for the magazine but some digital duties will be included. This role is located in our New York City office.

Responsibilities include:

  • Generate timely, compelling story ideas
  • Write and top edit original stories
  • Recruit new writers and assign stories
  • Work closely with the art and photo departments to determine the visual approach to a story
  • Line edit, write headlines and captions, work with top editors
  • Incorporate fact-checking changes, proof finals, and generally shepherd the story to completion
  • Willingness to collaborate and contribute to the digital team and other areas under the brand umbrella

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or Communications
  • At least five years of experience writing or editing at a magazine, website, or digital product
  • A strong service-journalism sensibility
  • A passion for the Men’s Health lifestyle, including health, fitness, food, style
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative work style
  • Strong time management skills essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work closely with other editors and autonomously

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • At least five years of experience writing or editing

  • Be comfortable representing Men’s Health in conferences, on the radio, and on television, as needed
