Job Description:

The managing editor focuses on the development and delivery of ASU Thrive Magazine and ASU signature publications. As a member of the creative services team, he or she is an experienced journalist who manages the day-to-day operations of the magazine, prepares content for digital distribution of stories and engages in special projects related to signature publications. To be successful in this position, the managing editor possesses a unique combination of strong journalism, editing and management skills. Using readership studies, story analytics, and monitoring trends in the new landscape, the managing editor works with creative team to create compelling content that effectively increases the readers' engagement and affinity for Arizona State University.

He or she will directly report to the Senior Director of ASU Thrive magazine and work closely with an interdepartmental team of designers, writers, strategists and stakeholders. Salary Range:
$54,000 - $77,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties:

Leads the day to day operations and planning for ASU Thrive Magazine and special publications. Works closely with the senior director and publisher of the magazine to create and maintain editorial calendars, story budgets, and production schedules. Accountable for taking care of the many details related to developing the editorial portion of the magazine and ensuring their completion. Maintains documentation and proactive communication to keep work teams and stakeholders well informed on the progress.

Manages the details of the editorial creative process. With a sharp eye for great storytelling and dedication to meeting publication deadlines, this position is responsible for creating productive relationships with skilled freelancers and staff writers and ensuring quality content is delivered. Responsible for assigning stories, writing display copy, editing and proofing. As a skilled problem-solver and editorial planner, he or she must be able to plan for in-depth stories as well as be able to react and implement late-breaking news. After the magazine has gone to print, the managing editor prepares content from the magazine for additional use in a variety of distribution channels and by a variety of university departments.

Develops a depth of knowledge regarding the university brand and its diverse readership base in order to serve as an effective curator of university content. He or she must be able to draw upon a depth of knowledge of editorial development, marketing research and readership insights, familiarity with the brand strategy and communication goals in order to create effective editorial plans and secure the appropriate editorial resources.

Masters key technology used in daily operations. Advanced skills in Adobe products (InCopy and InDesign), Microsoft Office, Google docs and Direct messaging (Such as Slack).

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and five (5) years of related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

Journalism and editing skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of news writing, editing and distribution of news and feature releases.
  • Experience as an editor for features-based publication is preferred.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining editorial calendars, project plans and story budgets.
  • Experience in contracting, directing and editing the work of freelance and in-house writers to ensure the delivery of high-quality, on-time delivery of stories.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AP style, copywriting and proofreading.
  • Experience in collaborating across teams and coordinating work among executive, editorial, creative and production teams.
  • Experience in producing best-in-class publications that marry compelling stories with outstanding visuals that have demonstrated a measurable impact.
  • Experience in writing of display copy, including headlines, subheads, captions, pull-quotes and calls to action for the magazine and associated deliverables (reprints, etc.)
  • Experience in creating content and editing/refining of existing content for one-pagers, news briefs and infographics.
  • Experience in evaluating complex topics (such as science, public policy and advanced research) and suggest story angles and ideas that are designed for broad distribution and a more general readership base.
  • Experience working with and or developing editorial style guidelines and applying organizational style and brand standards.

Communication and marketing skills

  • Experience preparing content from a magazine for digital distribution (social media, video supplements, website posting).
  • Experience taking results of readership testing and analytics and applying it to editorial process and story selection.

Management and operational skills

  • Experience in productive working relationships with a broad range of personality types and styles with individuals who do not directly report to the position or the department.
  • Experience in tracking department expenditures as they relate to contracting writers and working with assigned colleges to ensure process is followed and funds are accounted for.
  • Experience with project planning and management including tracking progress in project management systems, facilitating and tracking necessary approvals, and reporting on status and performance.
  • Evidence of a strong service orientation, a disciplined work ethic and ability to instill a high standard of excellence to the overall marketing team.
  • Evidence of a "hands-on", "roll-up-the-sleeves" mentality and "does what it takes" attitude to drive success.
  • Experience in working effectively in an environment subject to tight deadlines which often includes conflicting priorities.
  • Experience in working from concept/idea to develop tangible product with an understanding of the subject and targeted audience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Experience in developing and managing contractor deliverables to ensure adherence to established deadlines and quality standards.
  • Experience in problem solving and decision making.
  • Experience in using key technologies such as Adobe InCopy, Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Distiller, Dropbox, Google Docs/Google Drive, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, project management systems, email and instant messaging.

Working Environment: 

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • May require walking and/or driving to a variety of campus locations
  • May need to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays
