Freelance Web Editor at Genome

Genome magazine is seeking a talented freelance web editor to help us deliver outstanding content to our existing audience and to attract new readers. The ideal candidate will manage and post daily programming and news coverage, oversee a team of freelance writers, and have a keen interest in genomics and personalized medicine. The position will require 20 to 30 hours per week for six months with an opportunity for contract extension. Start date will be mid to late August 2017. Salary competitive.

Key responsibilities:

  • Research, plan, write, and edit web content
  • Proofread and fact check content for accuracy
  • Produce and publish content in a creative way including adding images, graphics, videos, and artwork
  • Collaborate with editorial and design teams to improve article content and presentation
  • Manage freelance writers and make sure deadlines are met
  • Maintain editorial/production calendars for website
  • Help develop multimedia content including apps, videos, slideshows, and podcasts
  • Monitor website’s traffic to measure popularity
  • Comply with copyright and privacy regulations
  • Post and promote web content through social media


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • Experience in science or medical writing and/or editing is preferred
  • Excellent managerial and communication skills
  • Ability to write, edit, and produce content under deadline pressure without compromising accuracy or credibility
  • Solid multitasking ability – must be able to juggle multiple developing stories at once
  • Homepage management skills – ability to create a website that is a holistic experience rather than a list of stories
  • 3+ years of experience as a web editor or similar position
  • Experience working in AP style
  • Expert knowledge of WordPress
  • Experience with MS Office, InDesign, Photoshop and other publishing tools
  • Comfortable with Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms
  • Preference for a contractor from the Dallas/Fort Worth area but will consider remote applications
