Job Description

Family Circle is the roadmap for millions of women at a new point in their lives. Her teens are getting a life of their own, and she is too. And we’re right there with ideas for making the most of this time. We literally go full circle, giving her ways to simplify, destress, and problem solve through the highs and lows of parenting and the chaos of everyday life. Whether she’s trying to balance busy schedules, put dinner on the table, or make sure homework is done, we get it. And we help her maintain a sense of self in the middle of it all. Perfection not required.

The Editorial Assistant provides administrative support to the Editor-in-Chief, performing duties such as scheduling appointments, drawing up contracts, filing expense reports and invoices, booking travel, answering phones, processing mail, and responding to reader calls/letters/emails. The Editorial Assistant also helps Directors across departments (beauty, health, food, etc), calling in/testing products for photo shoots, handling returns, coordinating product giveaways, and conducting additional reporting for the magazine/site as needed. For skilled candidates, the position includes the opportunity to write sidebars and short items.

Provide administrative support (answering phones, scheduling meetings, processing expense reports, making travel arrangements, etc); answer reader calls, emails, and letters; process writer contracts.

Call in products for editorial testing & photo shoots; coordinate returns and product giveaways; attend press events.

Research, write, report, and generate ideas for magazine and site, such as short news items, sidebars, small columns.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience:

Editorial internship or assistant position at a national consumer magazine or website targeted to a national audience

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated expertise and enthusiasm in magazine publishing.
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interact responsibly and politely with readers, experts and senior management.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills. Proficiency with Word, InCopy, Excel, Woodwing and PowerPoint helpful.
  • Working knowledge of Premiere/Final Cut Pro/video editing is a plus.
