Editor in Chief, Civil Engineering Magazine

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), one of the nation’s largest and industry respected nonprofit organizations, is currently searching for a professional and experienced editor-in-chief to lead ASCE’s award-winning flagship publication, ensuring it remains a dynamic and sought-after publication of the highest editorial and graphical quality.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develops the editorial content for Civil Engineering—including photography and illustrations
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing contacts—both externally and internally—to understand the current work of civil engineers and the issues and trends facing the profession and its practice
  • Ensures that the editorial and photo/graphic content reflects the editorial mission established for the magazine
  • Leads an in-house staff of writers, editors, and graphic artists, and develops and maintains a stable of credentialed freelance contributors
  • Reviews and makes final approval of written and graphical content for the print, app, and web platforms at all stages of the development and production process
  • Works with the advertising staff regarding magazine content and schedules to enhance opportunities for advertising revenue
  • Ensures that production/printing deadlines are met
  • Develops and manages the magazine’s annual editorial budget


At a minimum, candidates will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a communications-related field (preferred)
  • 10 years of progressively challenging experience in an editorial environment
  • 7 years of experience and demonstrated success in leading a publication and its professional team
  • A thorough knowledge of four-color publication design – print and digital – including an understanding of the underlying electronic platforms and processes
  • A proven ability to forecast and manage budgets
