Job Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or journalism. Graduate degree in writing or fine arts preferred.

Experience: Seven years’ experience as a magazine editor, preferably newsstand. Must know all aspects of editorial, including idea creation, assignments, writing, rewriting, line editing, collaborating with writers, display copy writing, packaging, and infographics.

Skills: Demonstrate excellence in packaging, display, and long-form storytelling. Keen eye for detail. Must be highly collaborative and able to work confidently with designers. Should demonstrate aptitude for mentoring and teaching, and come with a contact list of literary nonfiction writers. Must be a subscriber or regular reader of a variety of newsstand magazines. Software: Microsoft Word, InDesign.

Position Summary

The Associate Creative Director serves as one of several editorial leaders of a monthly magazine with 5 million readers. The primary responsibilities are overseeing the editorial lineup in tandem with the Creative Director, planning and executing the feature well, and directing departments in the magazine. In addition, this editor will manage and mentor junior members of the staff, research and develop story ideas, assign narrative features, edit copy; as well as collaborate with designers and other editors on layout, infographics, and feature packages.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Reports to the Creative Director.
  • Carries out all the duties of an executive editor.
  • This editor also has formal managerial and supervisory responsibility for the magazine’s senior editor and two assistant editor
