FTC Issues Revised "Green Guides"

November 9, 2012

In October, after nearly two years, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released the revised “Green Guides.” The Green Guides help industries avoid potential enforcement actions for deceptive environmental claims by offering clarification and guidance for marketers when making environmental marketing claims.

Of note for publishers, there were no changes made to the definitions or guidance publishers rely on, including the definition of pre and post-consumer waste.  The guidance still allows publishers to claim multiple sources of fiber, including products containing pre-consumer sources like newsstand returns and printer waste and post-consumer sources as recycled.  Products containing a mix of pre- and post-consumer waste may not be labeled as containing exclusively post-consumer recycled fiber.
